This was also new for me. I traded this album for some of my own stuff, without actually knowing if I'd like tehse two artists or not. That's sometimes the way to get to know some of your favourite bands/projects, and guess what, I loved it.
First of all, the packaging is awesome. Like everything else from Toxic Industries, it's like opening a birthday present when receiving the package you ordered. This time the album came in a folded strong textured paper, covered in red candle drippings. It absolutely adds to the momentum of the album.
It starts of with Vo)))id's side, which is some classic drone-bient, low and brooding. Sometimes I thought it became a bit loud, but that's because the track i climbing to it climax, which doesn't seem so loud anymore when you pass it. Catacombs Of Doom, adding some churchbells to the mix, brings with him the same kind of ambient tonescapes, not copying Vo)))id's style, but complimenting it by giving balance to the entire thing.

Another 1+1 release, it seems he only releases 3" ep's, which is fine; some longer albums tend to start of sounding amazing, but then repeat the concept over and over for 40 minutes, and that's not good noise.
This however screams of horror, and that in a very good way. It shrieks like previous discography entries, but plays it with an extra eerie touch, reaching back into our memories of frightful events we blocked out ages ago.
Cover art is also pretty nice, a photograph made by the band itself.

I've had fun this past year, posting quite a few underground releases and helping to promote bands and labels. But it's too timeconsuming, I can't keep doing this.

I have my own record label (Sarutra's Music), my own metal band (Anak Krakatoa), my own ambient/noise project (___dREàgänN||||||) and I'm starting a new experimental ambient project with my girlfriend called :elle:.
On top of that, I'm still in college (I passed all exams of my second year and next year is my last year)(I do multimedia design) and I'd like to make a few good websites with my knowledge for my own projects.

So there are two options:

1) I put this blog to sleep, for now, perhaps forever, and you never hear from the underground music I had ready for you.

2) I continue posting, but on a very low rate, which means you still get to hear what new underground music I got in my collection, but it'll be less than before. I'll also refrain from reposting what I got from other blogs and just post what physical or original releases I've got.

Triptykon is a continuation of Tom Fischer's work on Celtic Frost's Monotheist. Monotheist didn't get many bad reviews, which stands to reason as the album was awesomely well written en amazingly well produced. This album isn't an exact copy of Monotheist, but it's definitely in the same vein.

It's been a while since I first listened to this progressive rock/electro band and I remember that I wasn't too impressed with their previous albums. They were fine in composition, but they lacked substance, it felt more like they wanted us to listen instead of experience.
In this album, still relatively new, they've done the exact opposite and they manage to pull it off magnificently. They still sound the same, but they feel different, like they finally made up their minds about how they want to sound.

I told you I'd post this as soon s I got this. It arrived this afternoon and I'm listening to it right now. Some harsher part of the album has just passed and we've landed in some mellow Fantail-like sizzling. It's quite capturing. The album artwork is amazing, that's actually the reason I bought this one, I expected it to be full of merzdrums again so I didn't really care that much about the music. Fortunately there are no explicit drum samples present, straight up old school noise (with a modern touch).

Again no image, but hey, quit your nagging, you're still getting the music..
This is the best release he's done. Ever. It has everything he's known for. There are dreamy ambient ideas, a bit darker than usual, layered with haunting howls and screams, which makes it eerie as hell, and there are harsher analogue noise tantrums, bashing their way through the entire release.
This is again one of my own cassette rips, so the quality of the sound is lower than the original (and not in a wav-to-mp3 kind of way...). If you like what you're hearing, then definitely get a copy before they run out.

I realize this isn't a great picture, but the batteries from my camera are dead at the moment and you won't find any other pictures of this releas on the web because it is super rare!
If Dotåbåtå wants this removed, I totally understand, because he only made three copies (as far as I know) and he released it myself. I could however tell you this is nothing like the original cassette, as I don't have very good equipment to rip cassettes to mp3's, and it all comes out mono as wel.
I realize that he specifically said "No Digital" on an inserted paper, but hey, what can I say. It's not that I myself will listen to this on my computer, I'll use the original cassette, but this blog is all about sharing music and I don't want to make duplicates of this cassette and distribute them myself, that would be even worse than what this pirate's doing..

Anyway. Wall-like noise. All analog. Pretty awesome. I'm sorry about the quality.

The only album by Cathedral I had heard before this one was Forest of Equilibrium. And let me tell you, in that situation this album comes as a very big surprise. Where Forest of Equilibrium is as doom as it gets, this one is as progressive as it gets, not in rhythm/tempo changes or in intricate riffing, but mostly just in the way they bring it. I hav no clue how their other albums sound, but I can say I became instantly in love with this one.

A split by this blog's two favourite artists: harsh noise installation Boar and dreamy drone delegation Dotåbåtå. I was thrilled to buy this from Dangerous Sounds (label) but when I first heard it, it was quite a dissapointment. It had neither of the artists good qualities, Boar's side wasn't too harsh, it didn't have the energy I was expecting it to have. And Dotåbåtå's side of the split had something unrecognizable, and most times I would welcome this, but this time it couldn't please me as much.
It's still something to listen to though. I'm not too fond of this release, as both sides don't quite match up, but each side does fit in their artist's discography. And the front cover in the jewel case was very pleasant to look at.

We love the Boar-man. Harsh yet delicate. I was lucky enough to get this in the mail not too long ago, together with some other nefarious nutcracking soundbits which i'll be posting hopefully soon. It's more of the same actually, there's no real variation on the familiar Boar sound, but that isn't a bad thing.
The CD came in a selfmade plastic sleeve, consisting of two megatough plastic sheets stapled together. It was hard to get the CD out of that pvc prison, but it was worth it.

Some Heavy Metal for a change. I hope to refrain from posting albums by bands that are too popular right now, especially concerning the metal and rock genres. But more unknown bands like this one could use some free promotion.

Yes, the person behind Black Sun Aeon himself has released an illegal prerelease copy on the internets, because he believes that without it, few people would actually listen to his music, let alone knwo if they like it and want to buy a physical copy.

This is some very classy doom death metal. I would love to compare this to My Dying Bride, my favourite doom death band, but BSA sounds nothing like MDB.They have a very bass-driven guitar sound, some necessary teareautiful riffing and some excellent deep grunts. The only thing that put me off was the pronunciation of the clean sung parts. I know, I'm a nitpicker, but stil..

Danny Elfman - Alice In Wonderland

Something lighter now. Danny Elfman brings another one of his choir-driven Burton teengoth melting soundtracks. This is still relatively new, unfortunately it sounds pretty much the same as his previous work, but less good actually. You'll find out he repeats the main theme far too often and seems to want to stay on the path he already walked upon. He isn't open for change anymore, I think he's far too set in his ways now to still come up with something fresh and interesting. It all started going downhill with the Charlie & the Chocolate factory soundtrack and he hasn't been able to pull himself straight up until now.
It's not that his previous work is bad, au contraire, those were instant classics, but you can't keep composing the same routines over and over again, that would be like when a painter will only paint the same geometric figures, but only in different colours and texture.

There were nonetheless still some enjoyable parts, but the "Alice.. oooOOOHH Alice" got quite a bit annoying.

Ok, I'm doing some other albums after this. As much as I love Final Fantasy music, it's a bit too much for me to do at once. I'm not enjoying it anymore. So after this one, I'll take a little brake from FF-posting.
We're going out with a bang though. I simply love the movie and its soundtrack. FF:AC is more showing of Square's amazing animation talents than actual storytelling, but when you watch it with that in mind, you can't do anything but melt as the images float through your tv screen. And the soundtrack's only purpose seems te be nothing more than add extra tension to the film's already intense action sequences. Hard guitars, hard frantic beats, hard everything, even hard choir. It's awesome.

In my opinion, the Last Order animated short was amazing, it had a solid soundtrack and a well-told storyline. Most of that is due to the original, the main Final Fantasy game, where it derives most of its story and its scoring, but there are some finer aspects you didn't get to see or hear in the game itself. And that's always a plus.

I have no psp, which is too bad, because I actually want to play this game, it seems like a lot of fun. If anyone ever finds some sort of psp-emulator send me a non-descreet message! Yarr!
It's strikes me as weird though, that this game, which couldn't be all that much larger than let's say Final Fantasy IV, has more soundtrack. Does this mean that they're pushing too hard on the scoring? Perhaps they realize that a soundtrack to a Final Fantasy game has a great business potential, so they milk it dry by putting perhaps too much music in the game.
Well, I can't really have an honest opinion in this, as I haven't played it yet, but it certainly feeled that way too me. We all love a large amount of music, but as a Final Fantasy gamer, I want to be able to still humm along to the music just by playing the game, not because I bought (or downloaded) the soundtrack..

This album contains tracks that didn't appear on the single-player game. I quite honestly never knew about a multiplayer option in this game, not until I saw there was a soundtrack released for it. I have no idea how that works though, do you both play as Vincent..? o_0"
This is by far the hardest entry in the FF-soundtrack series I've encountered, perhaps the thought "two sets of guns equals double the volume" or something like that. I like it, but it didn't sound very Final Fantasy to me, call me old-fashioned but I like my classics well taken care of.
It was only released through download, why I couldn't find any larger cover art is beyond me..

I have not played this game, I intend to, but after I played all the other Final Fantasy games. The character Vincent Valentine is a good one to base an enitre game upon, but the gameplay itself lacks appeal.
The soundtrack was also not that good, not for the titel it falls under that is, FFVII received to much praise for this soundtrack to ever get close to its predecessor's fame and quality.

Nobuo Uematsu - Final Fantasy VII

This is it. It ain't my favourite entry in the series, but the internets gave me reason to believe it sure is everyone else's. I do have to admit that it comes to a second place, but my FF numero uno is still to come.
Musically, this is solid. For me, this is what set the standards on every Final fantasy soundtrack, even the ones from previously released games, just because this one is the first one to truly feel like it is complete. Nothing that Nobuo Uematsu could have composed extra would have fit in, every published track on these discs has its own purpose, its own addition to the whole of the soundtrack, the whole of the game, the story is told completely, so there could be no extra things to tell us.
If you haven't downloaded any of the other soundtracks, I do recommend you to download this one.

This has about the same value for me as the original soundtrack of the game, same "been there, done that" feeling. And even though I just read that Nobuo Uematsu himself was very pleased with the soundtrack and this piano collection, I still don't like it that much. It's not that it isn't good, it's just not outstanding. I expect more from Uematsu and from a Final Fantasy score.

I can't really review this soundtrack from the gamer point of view, because I haven't played this game yet. I did buy the psone remake a while ago, but I'm too busy right with too many rpg's: Mystic Quest, Breath of Fire III, Dragon Quest VIII, Digimon World 2003 and Final Fantasy X-2. But after I defeated the last boss of the last rpg in this list, I will play Final Fantasy VI..

Since Episode V, the amount of discs never returns to just one, so be prepared for long blog posts, with long tracklistings and long hours of Final Fantasy-ismic Music.
I thought this soundtrack felt like a megamix of previous Final Fantasy melodies, same structure, same build up, same lightheartedness where necessary, but all very well played out over the three discs. I did think a few times that it was time for Nobuo Uematsu to get out of his lazy chair and show us some new tricks, instead of playing by the same old rules in the book.
This doesn't mean there aren't new compositions here, it just felt a bit "same old, same old" some times.

In contrast to what I wrote about the original soundtrack, the Final Fantasy 5 piano version is actually my favourite piano version of any Final Fantasy episode. It's got everything, something lighthearted, something serious and somber and something exciting and with a faster tempo. I love it.
What bugs me though, is that the tracklist uses different translations for the titles. I almost hesitated and wanted to use the Japanese kanji, but I went with English as I don't understand Japanese (yet...).

Nobuo Uematsu - Final Fantasy V

This is the fifth installement in the main Final Fantasy series. And the first one to come with more than one disc as a soundtrack. So needless to say, it's requires longer listening time than previous posts. The problem with longer soundtracks is that it becomes harder to make sure all the tracks work together, to make it convincing that the two discs are a whole, not a collection of tracks. And I thought it didn't quite work out that way. It didn't get to be one feeling, it felt quite unhinged and sometimes even out of place. Especially during the actual game, it was very noticeable that you went from one seen to the next, because of the soundtrack lying underneath.
It's also supposed to be one of the classics, one of the most reverred Final Fantas soundtracks out there, focusing around the "Dear Friends" track. But even after 20 gazillion listening sessions, I still don't get what the big fuss is all about. I thought it was nothing special. There were some good tracks though, like "Mambo De Chocobo" and "Harvest", but you could just as well listen to the piano versions of those tracks.
Still, if you're a fan or if you've played it once, you should get it, just for the nostalgic feel to it.

We all know that this game is a variation on the final fantasy theme, released as an introduction to the serious business. And it shows in the soundtrack as well. I'm playing this game right now, I bought it for my SNES, and even though it gets better after a while, it's still a bore regarding the other amazing titles in the series. I found this soundtrack to be some sort of misfit in the entire series (together with Mystic Quest). It features a variety of genres, all in midi format of course, but there seemed to be little coherence. It felt like like a collection of unrelated songs, not what I came to expect from Nobuo Uematsu.
Regardless, there are still some fine tracks among these, especially "Chocobos!", that track is an instant classic.
I haven't played this game yet, I have no idea what it's about. I will someday, but it'll have to be via some fanlation and an emulator, because the game was never released outside of Japan (if you don't consider the DS-remake).

She handles here noise quite well, though she might be too dependent music samples, most of the time too recognizable for my taste. This was requested by both the artist and by someone in my shoutbox. This is by a new ambient/noise artist called Uitgezonderd (which means excluded in dutch). I believe he's a painter by profession and he's actually quite good at it. His music is at one point dark ambient, at another point just plain ambient, something he calls Lynchian Ambient (named after the infamous film director). There's also one digital noise track, it gave me quite a scare once it came on after all that soothing ambient.
